About
👋 I’m Alexander Cheung, a mission-driven, tech-forward designer for both consumer and B2B applications. I have led growth teams, innovation/R&D teams, as well as more bread-and-butter teams like search/browse, in both in-person and remote settings.
I spent the last several years of my career at young startups, Tinyhood (Series A) and Forma (Series B). Tinyhood has built a parenting class platform to empower all parents with the knowledge they need to thrive in the most important responsibility they might have in life. There, I wore "all the hats" by managing a design team, overseeing design across the company, all the while continuing to design and ship product at a dizzying pace. I then joined Forma, a flexible benefits platform, during a chaotic time. I spent the majority of my time there working with a team of product managers to salvage the product from years of technical and design debt while leading design for our primary customers (companies and their benefits administrators).
Before that, I led multiple teams at Wish (the e-commerce juggernaut and conceptual predecessor to Temu), including Wish Local (where Wish partnered with tens of thousands of local stores worldwide), and the first half of the consumer journey (growth/acquisition & product consideration). In addition to my top-level responsibilities, I spearheaded and led the product rebrand effort and was a founding co-chair of our team’s design culture committee.
Preceding Wish, I led the design team for conversational shopping and search/browse at Nordstrom, and explored futuristic machine learning applications at Google Research (Cerebra), working on camera, privacy, mindful OS, and authentication. I was originally inspired to pursue product design after spending my first years out of college at Apple, where human-centered design was part and parcel of my rotational leadership program in the retail sector.
I’m a firm believer that every product ties back in some way to a significant social issue, and that every product can and should be meaningful. I became a designer because I know there are powerful forces shaping our world that can shortchange us if we let our guard down. In a tech-driven world, design—humanity-centered design—is one of the last remaining citadels to defend our common existence and build a world that works better for everyone.

On the personal side, I am married to a women's mental health therapist and we are parents to two outdoor cats and two indoor children. Well, mostly indoor. We ski, backpack, rockhound, geocache, paddleboard, and mountain bike too.
In my spare time, I operate a nature-based, learner-driven K-6 microschool called Wilderland Academy with a volunteer team of parents. My other larger-than-life aspiration? Living next door to friends by acquiring land, subdividing it, and creating a communal backyard for us all to share a life together (still a work in progress).
I grew up in Silicon Valley, lived in Manhattan, the Pacific Northwest, Texas, and Hong Kong, and am now settled in the Intermountain West.
I also collect James Beard award-winning cookbooks, read or listen to a dozen books at a time, and host plant-based dinner parties in the Great Outdoors.
Even though most of my work since the pandemic has been remote, I believe that in-person gatherings are critical in developing and establishing productive and professional relationships (not to mention lasting friendships!). I'm a very intentional host (and huge fan of Priya Parker), and love planning events that are infused with meaning, purpose, and connection.
