I served as a manager on Wish’s product design team (leading 3, then 5, then 7) from January 2020 to October 2022, but led out on a number of team-wide initiatives well before then. Leadership holds a special place in my career, as I have found shepherding the workaday culture and mentoring the growth of designers as some of the most fulfilling experiences in my life.
I look back fondly at my experiences building and rebuilding design team culture at Wish. This deck chronicles how I worked with my fellow design leaders to foster the best team culture I have ever been a part of (and it was all remote to boot!). This experience made me realize that remote teams can have just as warm, inviting, and resonant team cultures as in-person ones. I worked with fellow leaders and team members to not only cultivate this distinctive, ego-free team culture, but also navigate and roll back downturns in morale and dips in cultural values.
